Expert Photo Editing

From Complex Edits to Clean Finishes: Photo Magic Made Simple

My Photoshop and AI-powered editing work includes everything from complex object removal and face swaps to custom background generation and garment recoloring.

Removing Objects

South Hills School of Business & Technology’s Marketing Director gave me content for a “Throwback Thursday” social media post about an installation of sculptures on campus grounds. Inspired, I decided to create a Campus Art section on the State College Main Campus location page on the school's website. The Marketing Director expressed that she did not like the downspout running through the sculpture, so I removed it by selecting, copying, and pasting small sections of bricks and skewing them to get the mortar to line up properly. I then had to recreate the address sign using a rectangle (also skewed) and a font that was similar. Text effects were applied to make the sign appear realistic.

Recoloring Clothing

Students at one of South Hills School of Business & Technology’s campuses completed a capstone project which required them to do a presentation. Two of the females in the group wore blush colored bottoms (a skirt and a pair of leggings). Particularly on mobile devices, the women appeared nude from the waist down in a smaller version of the group image. I created two edits, one with completely different colored bottoms and one where I enhanced the tone of the existing colors. The Director of Marketing elected to go with the latter edit to stay truer to the spirit of what the students had actually worn.

Face Swapping—Human

I needed a photo of the President, the Co-founder, and the Director together for South Hills School of Business & Technology’s history page. Pulling from my archives, I found an image where I could crop the three of them, but the Co-founder’s facial expression rendered the original image unusable. Luckily, there was another image that had her smiling, so I swapped her face, cropped the image, and corrected the color for the final product.

Face Swapping—Animal

For an installment of South Hills School of Business & Technology’s Alumni Stories, the Marketing Department received images from the subject of the interview, Thad, and his dog, Bronson. The layout of the website favors landscape images, and the dog was not looking at the camera in the only landscape image provided. I was able to take the dog’s face from another photo the student had provided to create a suitable landscape image for the story page.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

While building an online archive for The Pulse, the newsletter of Penn State's Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences, I faced a challenge in converting square images to a required landscape format. In cases where original uncropped images were unavailable or unsuitable for traditional cropping, I used Adobe Photoshop’s AI tools to intelligently extend backgrounds and add contextually appropriate elements. This approach preserved visual quality and consistency across the archive, while maintaining the integrity of the original content.
